Designer’s Gallery

Along with creating the rules for tabletop games, James Ernest is also an accomplished illustrator and graphic designer with several industry awards and more than 100 game products in his graphic design catalog.

This entire website is his current design portfolio. However, for the purposes of getting freelance work, he has gathered some of the highlights and history below.

James began his career in games in 1993 as a freelance illustrator and technical writer, contributing to Magic: the Gathering and working as an in-house graphic designer and artist at Wizards of the Coast. He has extensive credits in design, layout, typography, photography, art direction, and prepress.

Since founding Cheapass Games in 1996, James has done production design, graphic design, rules writing, editing, and art direction for more than 100 tabletop games. That work continues today as he wears nearly every hat at Crab Fragment Labs.
