Ducks in a Bucket

A simple dice game for 2 to 6 players.

Designed by James Ernest and gaming mathematician Joe Kisenwether, Ducks in a Bucket is a press-your-luck game in which players attempt to build their best hands through several rolls of the dice.

In addition to the rules, you’ll need five dice in a matching color, and one more die in a different color. You will also need a way to keep score.

Get Your Ducks In Line!

Ducks in a Bucket is a simple press-your-luck game. Complete rules are in the 2-page PDF below.

In brief, players start their inning by rolling six dice: five matching dice, and one unique “Boss” die. The Boss determines which of the other dice can be promoted to the “bucket,” and which must be held back for the next roll. After any promotion, the player may choose to stop or roll again. But if they roll again without promoting a die, they could lose everything!

Ducks in a Bucket was designed by James Ernest and Joe Kisenwether, and illustrated by John Kovalic. Download, play, and enjoy!

A note on the video: James literally forgot that deuces were wild in this game, which is a perfectly okay way to play, but of course it’s better if you read the rules before you record the video. Er, that is, before you play the game.
